D.I.Y All-Purpose Cleaner

Distilled white vinegar is an extremely versatile cleaning ingredient. With 4-6% acetic acid, vinegar has disinfectant properties that can kill common viruses and foodborne bacteria such as E. coli, Salmonella, and Listeria. Not to mention, vinegar is very affordable! When it comes to purchasing vinegar, you do not need to buy organic. You can get the most savings by buying in bulk at your local wholesale store, like Costco or Sam’s Club.

Vinegar is a MUCH safer choice than the standard cleaning products you’d typically find in your local supermarket. Common household cleaners and disinfectants contain chemicals called Quaternary Ammonium Compounds, which are antimicrobials that kill germs. However, they present health risks to humans (and pets), such as allergic reactions, respiratory issues, hormone disruption, and general skin irritation. Why use expensive chemical cleaners with a long list of ingredients you can’t pronounce when you could use something just as effective (and safe!) for a fraction of the cost?

Where can you use this all-purpose cleaner?

  • Sinks & Tubs
  • Toilets (and Toilet Bowls)
  • Stainless Steel Surfaces
  • Kitchen Surfaces (DO NOT use on granite, stone, metal, rubber, or wood surfaces as the acidity can cause damage)!
  • Toys
  • Door Knobs
  • Light Switches

Making your own all-purpose cleaning solution with white vinegar is very simple! You only need these 3-4 items:

  1. White Vinegar
  2. Distilled Water
  3. Glass Spray Bottle
  4. Essential Oil (Optional)

Fill your 16-ounce glass spray bottle with:

  • 1 cup white vinegar (between 4-6% acidity)
  • 1 cup distilled water
  • 15-20 drops of essential oil (optional)!
*I personally do not add essential oils because I have pets, and not all essential oils are pet-friendly. If you cannot stand the smell of vinegar, adding an essential oil will help, but if you have pets, consult your vet on some safe options for essential oil usage.

Spray a microfiber cloth with your cleaner (or the surface directly) and wipe clean. Using this cleaner on glass or mirrored surfaces is not recommended as it can leave behind a streaky residue. Detox your spring cleaning routine with this simple DIY cleaner. Enjoy!
